Dark Spots & Uneven Skin q+a

What causes dark spots and uneven skin tone?
The clinical name for dark spots is Hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is usually caused from an injury to the skin such as a pimple, scratch or other irritation. Sun exposure also causes hyperpigmentation which can be referred to as photo damage.
How can I prevent the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone?
If you have acne or hair growth which is causing your hyperpigmentation, then you must first start with trying to control the acne and hair growth. In some cases, the appearance of acne and ingrown hairs can be controlled by topical products but they often need professional treatments as well. At our Medical Spa, Urban Skin Solutions in Charlotte NC, we administer oral medications to control acne and prevent future scarring as well as laser hair removal to stop the hair growth that is causing hyperpigmentation. (click here to check it out!) And of course, we always recommend using a sunblock daily with a SPF level of 25 or higher. Clients who are trying to fade the appearance of hyperpigmentation or are prone to sun damage also need to wear hats in the sun and try to limit direct sun exposure.
What can I do to fade the appearance of my dark spots and restore an even skin tone?
In addition to minimizing sun exposure and wearing a daily sunblock, we recommend a daily corrective treatment applied at home to improve the appearance of your skin tone and hyperpigmentation. It takes a commitment from the client to be compliant with the daily application of the products as well as patience. Usually, the client’s dark spots did not appear overnight. The longer the hyperpigmentation has been there, as well as how much direct sun exposure the area has received can all play a part with how long it can take the appearance of hyperpigmentation to fade.
What are the best ingredients for fading the appearance of dark spots and maintaining an even skin tone?
Urban Skin Rx® has researched not only the most effective ingredients and strengths for hyperpigmentation, but the most effective combination of those ingredients. We use Kojic Acid, Arbutin, Ascorbic Acid, Retinol, Niacinamide, Hydroquinone, and sunblock ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Keep in mind hydroquinone is most effective when used for 4 months at a time and then 2 month breaks occur before returning for another 4 months.
